| O Fado Cod RecipieWed, 31 Dec 2008 07:51:31 -0800 by bidtodineFado is the Portuguese traditional song and the word itself comes from the Latin Fatum and means Fate. The origins of fado, the music, are not clear, but legend says, it was born from the longing of the Portuguese sailors on the long journeys far from home while discovering the world. The most common version though, is the one that places fado as a descendent of a Brazilian dance called lundum, discovered while the Portuguese court was exiled in Brazil, during the Napoleon wars. Certain, is that it was first sung by ladies of the night, who would tell their miserable stories to their sad listeners in the poorest neighbourhoods of Lisbon. Today, fado is sung in the best theatres around the world and you will surely find it one of the most passionate songs you have ever listened to. Since fado describes so well the Portuguese feeling, it is natural that this word had been the one adopted to be the name of a Portuguese Restaurant in London. O Fado, the restaurant, was established in 1960, in the most vibrant area of London - Knightsbridge. It grew as the place where the Portuguese community used to gather on the late hours in the evening to defeat the ??saudades? (longing) they had from their homeland. Several artists from Portugal would make a stop at the restaurant, in the middle of their tours, just to enjoy the typical ambiance lived there, from Tristão da Silva, Tony de Matos, Carlos do Carmo, Rui Veloso, Marisa, or even the fado diva Amália Rodrigues herself, just to name but a few. Nowadays O Fado intends to take it´s proposes even further and divulge the Portuguese Culture to other citizens of London. It has, therefore, loyal friends in the English, Japanese or Angolan communities that recognise and enjoy O Fado??s ambition to be faithfull to the traditions, cuisine and music of it´s country, while being concerned in also following the new trends to please it´s challenging guests. The main intention of O Fado is to dignify the image of Portugal abroad, mainly considering the ancestral relationship between Portugal and Great Britain, the oldest alliance in the world. Every night we recreate for our guests, the ambiance of a Lisbon ??house of fado? where, in respect to the deep feelings of the song, there is a typical ??sacred? line that says: ??Silêncio, que se vai cantar o Fado? - Silence, Fado is about to be sung. We invite you to travel with us at the sound of our music, while delighting yourself with our flavourful dishes Visit us and feel welcome to Portugal Welcome to O Fado Related: fado cod recipie | |
