| Bulldog (No)Thu, 08 Jan 2009 12:22:14 -0800 by Termite58Produced and played by drummer Dino Danelli and guitarist Gene Cornish of the Young Rascals, Bulldog's debut in 1972 opens with a heavy version of the Bobby Day number two hit from 1958, "Rockin' Robin," a performance which displays the strength and weakness of this ensemble. Bassist/lead vocalist Billy Hocher is a cross between Bob Tench of the Jeff Beck Group, Ian Lloyd of Stories, and Ralph Mormon of Savoy Brown. On tunes like "Juicin' With Lucy" and "Don't Blame It on Me," the singing becomes overbearing and a bit tedious, despite the journeyman abilities of the ex-Rascals producing this. Interesting that a band called Sweathog in 1971 had a hit with "Hallelujah" and a sound similar to Bulldog. Also worthy of note is that little Michael Jackson took "Rockin' Robin" back to number two nationally the same year this album was released, 1972. There is a real gem here in the song "No," a minor hit in some regions of the country that was written by Hocher and keyboardist John Turi. It suffered the same fate as Stories' excellent "I'm Coming Home," their 1972 almost-hit which is quite similar in sound and performance to Bulldog's "No." The Hocher/Turi songwriting team had some merit, with Billy Hocher's voice a bit more accessible on "You Underlined My Life" and "Have a Nice Day," both songs being somewhat pleasant and more refined than some of the other material here. John Turi gets to sing lead on the almost-funky version of Chuck Berry's "Too Much Monkey Business," featuring guitarists Eric Thorngren and Gene Cornish, who deliver a nice riff-rock sludge to augment Turi's boogie-woogie piano. Inevitable comparisons to the Rascals have the band falling short of what was accomplished when Cornish and Danelli performed with Eddie Brigati and Felix Cavaliere. "Parting People Should Be Good Friends" is nice British pop, and that style of radio-friendly songwriting and structure is where this band shines. It's just that the pop sensibilities are offset by the attempted blues of a song like "Good Times Are Comin'," which, unfortunately, holds this album back. Six years later, Gene Cornish and Dino Danelli would form Fotomaker with Wally Bryson of the Raspberries and a lineup similar to the Rascals. Though superior to Bulldog, the problem there as well was that a creative force like Eric Carmen or Felix Cavaliere was missing. The verdict is quite simple -- these energies put into more albums by the Rascals over these lost years is what the fans would have appreciated. Reports of a large bang and flashing lights skimming across the sky on the night a turbine on Conisholme wind farm was damaged have been told. Mr Stephen Willows and his wife, Dorothy who live in Fen Lane close to the Conisholme wind farm have told the Leader how Stephen was startled in his sleep by a loud bang at 4am Sunday morning. It is believed the damage which has left one of the massive blades missing and another bent out of shape happened at some point on Sunday night. They also reported how on Saturday night, Dorothy and two friends were travelling to Louth by car, when Dorothy looked up at the sky to see lights travelling in a strange fashion across the sky towards the wind farm. Dorothy said: "I don't believe in UFO's but it was a low flying object. This light seemed to be in the distance, and then it seemed to skim across the sky towards the turbines. "It might not be connected, but it is just how your mind works when something like this happens you think, could that have been the noise Stephen heard, or was that to do the light I saw? But until we know what has happened for definite it is very hard to say". The couple went to the scene to have a closer look, and like many residents, take photographs of the damage. But, when they arrived at the scene, they were shocked to find they had little evidence to go on. "When we got there, there was nothing to be seen - not even the propeller on the ground" added Dorothy. "Those blades are pretty sturdy we saw them when they were being constructed whatever has hit them has made quite an impact. I was shocked to see that there was no debris left". The company, Ecotricity have since sent engineers down to establish the cause of the damage to the turbine. Wednesday 3.20pm - THE mystery of the 'tentacle UFO' seen before the wind turbine at Conisholme was damaged has deepened. Now Coun Robert Palmer, Chairman of East Lindsey District Council, has stepped forward to say he too saw a strange light in the sky the night before the turbine blade fell off. He was travelling in a car and saw a light in the sky above the Conisholme wind farm. He said: "There was definitely something there." John Harrison from Saltfleetby has already told us how he saw a 'massive ball of light' with 'tentacles going right down to the ground'ver the wind farm on Saturday night. The next morning locals discovered a blade on one of the 89 metre high wind turbines has broken off and another blade was badly dented. Dorothy and Stephen Willows also saw strange lights on Saturday night which seemed to skim across the sky towards the turbines. Dorothy said: "I don't believe in UFO's, but there was a low flying object. This light looked to be in the distance, and then it seemed to skim across the sky towards the turbines." Stephen was woken by a 'large, loud bang that sounded like thunder' at 4am on Sunday morning. A team of experts from Ecotricity are investigating what caused the damage and say there is no danger to the public. One website has posted an image of an 'octopus UFO' along with the report and others are getting messages from people about the damage. One message posted on a website says: "Space Squid covert operatives working for Big Oil, destroying alternative energy sources. Sounds reasonable to me." Another says: "There are plans to build a wind turbine on the edge of the village where I live in Leicestershire so I will be keeping an eye out for any UFO activity once it is built!"
