Abraham's House
Thu, 08 Jan 2009 21:42:13 -0800 by wfdowns3

I recorded this while I was deployed to Iraq with the Army. While I was there, I had the amazing, once in a lifetime opportunity to do a tour of Abraham's house (yes, the guy from the Bible.) and the ancient city of Ur, which is his where he was born and lived for a long part of his life. In the video, I am walking around on his rooftop, trying my best to balance and not fall off, while at the same time trying to swat at giant man eating flys and gnats that were trying to carry me away.

8 Years Of 'Bushisms'
Thu, 08 Jan 2009 21:40:56 -0800 by ArchivesAlgeriennes

"There's no doubt in my mind, not one doubt in my mind, that we will fail." - Oct. 4, 2001, in Washington. Bush was remarking on a back-to-work plan after the terrorist attacks.- "It would be a mistake for the United States Senate to allow any kind of human cloning to come out of that chamber." - April 10, 2002, at the White House, as Bush urged Senate passage of a broad ban on cloning.- "I want to thank the dozens of welfare-to-work stories, the actual examples of people who made the firm and solemn commitment to work hard to embetter themselves." - April 18, 2002, at the White House.- "There's an old saying in Tennessee - I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee - that says, fool me once, shame on - shame on you. Fool me - you can't get fooled again." - Sept. 17, 2002, in Nashville, Tenn.- "Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." - Aug. 5, 2004, at the signing ceremony for a defense spending bill.- "Too many good docs are getting out of business. Too many OB/GYNs aren't able to practice their love with women all across this country." - Sept. 6, 2004, at a rally in Poplar Bluff, Mo.- "Our most abundant energy source is coal. We have enough coal to last for 250 years, yet coal also prevents an environmental challenge." - April 20, 2005, in Washington.- "We look forward to hearing your vision, so we can more better do our job." - Sept. 20, 2005, in Gulfport, Miss.- "I can't wait to join you in the joy of welcoming neighbors back into neighborhoods, and small businesses up and running, and cutting those ribbons that somebody is creating new jobs." - Sept. 5, 2005, when Bush met with residents of Poplarville, Miss., in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.- "It was not always a given that the United States and America would have a close relationship. After all, 60 years we were at war 60 years ago we were at war." - June 29, 2006, at the White House, where Bush met with Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.- "Make no mistake about it, I understand how tough it is, sir. I talk to families who die." - Dec. 7, 2006, in a joint appearance with British Prime Minister Tony Blair.- "These are big achievements for this country, and the people of Bulgaria ought to be proud of the achievements that they have achieved." - June 11, 2007, in Sofia, Bulgaria.- "Mr. Prime Minister, thank you for your introduction. Thank you for being such a fine host for the OPEC summit." - September 2007, in Sydney, Australia, where Bush was attending an APEC summit.- "Thank you, Your Holiness. Awesome speech." April 16, 2008, at a ceremony welcoming Pope Benedict XVI to the White House.- "The fact that they purchased the machine meant somebody had to make the machine. And when somebody makes a machine, it means there's jobs at the machine-making place." - May 27, 2008, in Mesa, Ariz.- "And they have no disregard for human life." - July 15, 2008, at the White House. Bush was referring to enemy fighters in Afghanistan.- "I remember meeting a mother of a child who was abducted by the North Koreans right here in the Oval Office." - June 26, 2008, during a Rose Garden news briefing.- "Throughout our history, the words of the Declaration have inspired immigrants from around the world to set sail to our shores. These immigrants have helped transform 13 small colonies into a great and growing nation of more than 300 people." - July 4, 2008 in Virginia.- "The people in Louisiana must know that all across our country there's a lot of prayer - prayer for those whose lives have been turned upside down. And I'm one of them. It's good to come down here." - Sept. 3, 2008, at an emergency operations center in Baton Rouge, La., after Hurricane Gustav hit the Gulf Coast.- "This thaw - took a while to thaw, it's going to take a while to unthaw." Bush was referring to the terrorists who carried out the Sept. 11 attacks.President George W. Bush will leave behind a legacy of Bushisms, the label stamped on the commander in chief's original speaking style. Some of the president's more notable malaprops and mangled statements:---- "I know the human being and fish can coexist peacefully." - September 2000, explaining his energy policies at an event in Michigan.

Howard Zinn on “War and Social Justice” 11.08.2008 1/5
Thu, 08 Jan 2009 21:31:16 -0800 by palimadar

Howard Zinn is one of this country’s most celebrated historians. His classic work A People’s History of the United States changed the way we look at history in America. First published a quarter of a century ago, the book has sold over a million copies and is a phenomenon in the world of publishing—selling more copies each successive year. After serving as a bombardier in World War II, Howard Zinn went on to become a lifelong dissident and peace activist. He was active in the civil rights movement and many of the struggles for social justice over the past forty years. He taught at Spelman College, the historically black college for women, and was fired for insubordination for standing up for the students. He was recently invited back to give the commencement address. Howard Zinn has written numerous books and is professor emeritus at Boston University. He recently spoke at Binghamton University a few days after the 2008 presidential election. His speech was called “War and Social Justice.”

'Rajapaksa regime killed Lasantha'
Thu, 08 Jan 2009 20:58:50 -0800 by rajiv1989

he murder of 'Sunday Leader' Editor is part of an anti-democratic conspiracy, opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has said, claiming that the Rajapaksa regime is rendering the southern people helpless by killing its political opponents. At a media briefing in Colombo today (Jan. 08th), convened by parties in the joint opposition, he said this was similar to the manner in which the LTTE had decimated the Tamils their political, religious and cultural leaderships.Mr. Wickremesinghe accused the government of president Mahinda Rajapaksa of being responsible for the killing of the senior journalist, and said police investigations cannot be trusted as the entire regime was immersed in fraud and corruption. He said measures would be taken to secure an international level inquiry into the Lasantha Wickrematunga murder as well as the attack on Sirasa media network's studio complex.Threats to the media by minister Dallas Alahapperuma and several other government strongmen not to give publicity to the two incidents go on to prove that the government had a clear link to them, he said. Also speaking here, leader of SLMC Rauff Hakeem said this killing would spell the beginning of the end of the present regime. The repression against the media worsened to these levels just days after the president took over the media ministry, he said, adding that this situation is second only to Iraq and that it would not be surprising if Sri Lanka overtakes that country in the future."The murder of Mr. Lasantha Wickrematunga gives a signal to political leaders and journalists to take their responsibilities more seriously and safeguard media freedom and democracy."Leader of SLFP Mahajana Wing Mangala Samaraweera also addressed the media briefing. The climax in the repression of free media is the murder of Lasantha Wickrematunga, he said, adding that since gaining power in 2006, president Mahinda Rajapaksa's dictatorial rage has worsened with the killings of politicians J. Pararajasingham, N. Raviraj and T. Maheswaran. He too, cast doubts on the police investigations into this latest high profile killing, saying that "it is the IGP who lights firecrackers for the present regime."Mr. Samaraweera said, "Lasantha Wickrematunga had used his pen to point out shortcomings of every government in the past two decades. It is the Rajapaksa regime that runs these killer gangs. It is the same gang that threw bombs, fired at and set fire to Sirasa media network's studio complex a couple of days ago."He noted that Mr. Wickrematunga had been a person, whom the Rajapaksa regime found it impossible to silence."Soon after he became president, Mahinda had telephoned Lasantha and abused him in raw filth," said the SLFP (M) leader."Lasantha had been readying to handover to court some documents pertaining to Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. He was also going to write for next Sunday paper about a massive swindle at the Defence Ministry. He had also planned to write about a secret decision taken at yesterday's cabinet meeting. That is why he was killed like this," he added.Democratic People's Front leader Mano Ganeshan and UNP general secretary Tissa Attanayake and party MP Lakshman Kiriella also attended the media briefing.
