La radiocronaca del leggendario Enrico Ameri dall'Azteca.Italia-G ermania 4-3. Quando terminarono i tempi supplementari, il nostro Paese si risvegliò diverso. Anzi in realtà nessuno era andato a dormire perché la semifinale del mondiale messicano del 17 giugno del 1970 ha tenuto tutti in piedi e ha mostrato al mondo un'Italia che non è più l'italietta timida e - calcisticamente parlando, ma non solo - inferiore. In campo gli uomini di Valcareggi trovano una determinazione che nessuno era disposto a pensare potesse appartenere a Rivera, Mazzola e compagni. Che si trovano subito in vantaggio: all'8' Boninsegna riesce a mettere in rete su appoggio di De Sisti. Bonimba non dà scampo a Maier. Ma il gol arriva troppo presto e i tedeschi rabbiosi cercano di pareggiare le sorti, con un assedio che dura oltre 80' minuti. L'Italia resiste, traballa, ha paura, si difende, ma tiene. Sembra che il miracolo possa avvenire e che la sorte per una volta sia dalla nostra parte. Ma il destino porta un difensore del Milan, che di gol certo non se ne intendeva a siglare l'1-1 a pochi istanti dal 90'. Una mazzata terribile quella che Schnellinger assesta sulle spalle della nazionale. Tutto lascia presagire che ci sarà un finale già scritto e che torneremo a casa, ancora una volta sconfitti e delusi. Ma non sarà così, perché lì inizia la vera storia di una delle partite che entreranno nella storia del calcio. Ecco i supplementari. I tedeschi cercano di chiudere e trovano il gol con Muller: una pallone pasticciato dalla difesa azzurra scivola lentamente in rete. 1-2 e palla al centro. Nando Martellini sente che il match ormai sta scivolando di mano agli italiani: ''Che amaro finale'', ammette il telecronista. Ma Burgnich trova il pareggio e poco dopo Riva ribalta il risultato: un uno-due incredibile che chiude i primi 15' dei supplementari. Nella seconda frazione i 22 in campo non hanno più energie, ma entrambe le squadre vogliono la vittoria. Orgoglio e carattere tengono in piedi i calciatori. L'Italia difende il vantaggio, ma non è ancora finita perché Muller mette dentro di testa il suo secondo gol, il terzo della Germania. Palla che supera Albertosi, insaccandosi tra il palo e Rivera che non riesce a intervenire, forse giudicando fuori il tiro. Tre a tre, con pochi minuti da giocare. Ma non è finita. Rivera, proprio lui non ci sta e trova il definitivo 4-3 che manda i tifosi increduli e felici come non mai, a esultare per le strade della Penisola.Rivera e compagni hanno cambiato una storia che sembrava già scritta, e nel Belpaese l'orgoglio nazionale torna a essere di moda.
