| Terry Walker @ MISS AFRICAN CARIBBEAN QUEEN 2006 CULTURE PAGEANT @ HACKNEY EMPIREWed, 07 Jan 2009 11:19:08 -0800 by MELLOWMIX1BIOGRAPHY OF MISS AFRICAN/CARIBBEANThe 18th of July 2003 saw the birth of the very first Miss Afro Caribbean Queen Beauty Pageant. An idea created by Mr Chris Calliste and Ras Iyans with the aim to give the opportunity to young women who are not models to experience the catwalk and participate in a beauty pageant. Miss Afro Caribbean is a celebration of our Afro Caribbean womens beauty, culture, intelligence and grace all brought under one umbrella by the Miss Afro Caribbean committee. The first Miss Afro Caribbean was an evening of pure delight from start to finish. Held at the previous Ocean in Mare Street Hackney the venue was a fitting platform for the array of beauty that graced the stage. Ladies from all the different Caribbean islands displayed their talents in swimwear, sports wear and eveningwear. The show itself was interjected with live performances from Miss Sylvia Tella, Lloyd Brown and the Rasites and Ruffneck, Feminine Touch, Daddy Ernie and Miss Mercedes supplied music on the night. The judges had the hard task of sifting through the beauty queens to find a winner. Eventually she was found from the beautiful island of Trinidad our first Miss Afro Caribbean Queen was Miss Arlene Villarule. The second Miss Afro Caribbean Queen was a much larger affair again held at Hackneys Ocean Music venue. Hosts for the night were DJ Elayne and Duke Baysee. The line up for artists performing on the night would have boasted a music show within itself, the late Justin Hinds, Don Ricardo, Loose Ends, Omar and Brushey-one-string, even the promoter himself (Ras Iyans) felt the need to sing a one tune and they were all backed by the Mellow Mix Band. Music was supplied by Gemi in ting Magic. The ladies on the night far exceeded our expectations and did not disappoint the waiting audience. Each lady took part in the spirit of the whole event and did not shy away from dancing and expressing their personality in front of the audience. Miss Rachel McIntosh from Trinidad was crowned our second Miss Afro Caribbean Queen and walked away with £1000 in prize money. The second prize is 2 tickets to the Caribbean (destination of own choice) and third prize was DVD player, CD player, Car stereo plus CDs and DVDs.Our main sponsors for the event were Stoke Newington Travel, The Voice Newspaper, New Nation, Hackney Gazette, Jet Star, Station FM, The Gleaner, Gargamel Magazine, The flying Squad, Supreme Radio and Crestmore Car finance. The third newly named Miss African Caribbean Queen was held on 24th September at Hackney Empire due to the closure of Hackneys Ocean music venue and was a total sell-out. The media attention generated by this event had been outstanding and the committee carried this event to the media mainstream, it was a beauty pageant to rival all others. It was seen as an opportunity for the every day African Caribbean woman to express her beauty to others in a glamorous setting provided by Mellow Mix Studios and the African Caribbean Music Federation.
